“Monkeys with clubs,” said one of our band of studious researchers. “That’s what politics is: monkeys with clubs.” Roger Kimball, PJM:

January 2nd, 2012 – Howard Portnoy, HotAir: NAACP Worker Sentenced to Prison for Voter Fraud

Lou  suggests sending this to your legislator… Thanks!
“As the battle wages on between the Justice Department and states that have passed laws requiring that voters present a valid photo ID at the polls, Attorney General Eric Holder has been joined in his crusade by the NAACP. That organization’s president, Benjamin Jealous, recently declared:

It’s been more than a century since we’ve seen such a tidal wave of assaults on the right to vote. Historically, when voting rights are attacked, it’s done to facilitate attacks on other rights. It is no mistake that the groups who are behind this are simultaneously attacking very basic women’s rights, environmental protections, labor rights, and educational access for working people and minorities. Voting rights attacks are the flip side of buying a democracy. First you buy all the leaders you can, and then you suppress as many votes as possible of the people who might object. (emph added, jb)

The group’s Legal Defense & Educational Fund (LDF) has even come out with a ‘report’ emphasizing that ‘the right to vote is the cornerstone of American democracy’ and asking, ‘How can we collectively encourage more people to participate in the political process?’ Consisting of 45 pages of grievance mongering, the document never actually answers that question, unless you count such helpful tips as “volunteer,” “write to your congressman,” and “inform yourself.”

Or unless you seek out a story appearing at The Daily Caller but otherwise receiving no coverage by the national media. Matthew Vadum reports:

[A]n NAACP executive sits in prison, sentenced for carrying out a massive voter fraud scheme.

In … April a Tunica County, Miss., jury convicted NAACP official Lessadolla Sowers on 10 counts of fraudulently casting absentee ballots. Sowers is identified on an NAACP website as a member of the Tunica County NAACP Executive Committee.

Sowers received a five-year prison term for each of the 10 counts, but Circuit Court Judge Charles Webster permitted Sowers to serve those terms concurrently, according to the Tunica Times, the only media outlet to cover the sentencing.

The NAACP hasn’t publicly commented on this stain on its otherwise would-be spotless reputation, though one can easily imagine them claiming that the case is an outlier. The NAACP LDF report asserts:

Instances of in-person voter fraud are extraordinarily rare. In Ohio, for example, a statewide survey of votes cast in 2002 and 2004 found that out of more than 9,000,000 voters, there were four instances of voter fraud. In fact, there are far more reported UFO sightings than reports of impersonation at the polls…

Clearly, the report is referring to an Ohio other than the Buckeye State, where according to court records:

[T]wo Ohio voters, including Christopher Barkley , [sic] claimed that they were hounded by the community-activist group ACORN to register to vote several times, even though they made it clear they’d already signed up. Barkley estimated he’d registered to vote ‘10 to 15’ times after canvassers for ACORN relentlessly pursued him and others. ‘I kept getting approached by folks who asked me to register,’ Barkley said….

ACORN bribed and/or pressured Freddie Johnson of Cleveland to register to vote 72 times. Johnson filled out 72 separate voter-registration cards over an 18-month period at the behest of ACORN. Johnson stated ‘[s]ometimes, they come up and bribe me with a cigarette, or they’ll give me a dollar to sign up, …The ACORN people are everywhere, looking to sign people up. I tell them I am already registered. The girl said, ‘You are?’ I say, ‘Yup,’ and then they say, ‘Can you just sign up again?’‘ He’d collected 10 to 20 cigarettes and anywhere from $10 to $15, he said. [Emphasis added]

Thanks Lou,

Time to visit our friends in Harrisburg?

Update: “I just talked to Senator Corman’s office. She said that HB 934 is NOT on the agenda of the Committee meeting today and she doubts it will be on tomorrow. The next Committee meeting will be on January 23. They only will be in session for about five days until next month. We have to step up the pressure!” Jo/Lou

Meanwhile, Tom Corbett has given the first week of February as a deadline!

“These are in addition to the several posted the other day.

1. From Katy in Lebanon; the response to her query by Senator Hughes:

Katy “How about this reply from Hughes that would seem to backup what Pileggi is saying”:

Hughes: “Thank you for taking the time to email me about HB 934. This bill is a transparent attempt on the part of the Republican Party to disenfranchise voters. It claims to combat voter fraud that simply does not occur in Pennsylvania and will cost the state millions of dollars to implement. I will never support legislation that impedes the ability of citizens to vote.”
Vincent J. Hughes State Senator-7th District Senate Democratic Appropriations Chair

2. From Lisa N, Mifflin County:

“Hi everyone, Corman is my senator. I had a write up in the paper asking our community to call. I put out an email to our members to call. I put out a calling post. I will do more! What is your idea? Lisa”

Lowman Henry, Lincoln Radio Journal: PA Needs Voter ID Law

Program 12-03

(January 21, 2012 – January 27, 2012) “This week on Lincoln Radio Journal: David Taylor of the PA Manufacturers Association hosts a Capitol Watch roundtable discussion on state issues with Kevin Shivers from the PA chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business and with Eric Boehm of the Pennsylvania Independent; And, Lowman Henry has a Town Hall Commentary on the need for Pennsylvania to have a voter ID law.”

Henry’s position is: 1) most of us have photo IDs for driving, airports, banks, check cashing, credit card use, buying beer, and club memberships; 2)No proof of ID is required to vote; Metcalf’s bill passed House, now considered by Senate; 3) past fraud in PA but DoJ turned a blind eye; need confidence in close outcomes; some benefit from a lax system but play a “race card”; ID  laws already upheld as Constitutional. Metcalf’s bill follows the Indiana model.

But: college kids get bogus IDs for buying liquor, a similar creativity will infect voter ID….

NH Union Leader: Voter Fraud

Thanks Jame O’Keefe!

“State officials plan to issue instructions soon to local election workers on how to better maintain voter checklists after a controversial watchdog group tried to obtain ballots by using the names of dead voters at polling stations in four communities on primary day.

Other developments resulting from the 10-minute video that Project Veritas posted on the Internet include:
— Town clerks in Goffstown and Bedford confirmed ballots were offered to people who gave the names of recently deceased people still on voter checklists.
— Election officials in Manchester and Nashua have turned over information to the Attorney General’s Office, which is investigating whether anyone broke state election or wiretapping laws.
— Workers seen and/or heard on the secretly shot video included a relative of Secretary of State William Gardner and the wife of a former Manchester alderman, according to Manchester City Clerk Matt Normand. Normand said the Attorney General’s Office didn’t ask for the names of those workers heard or seen on the video.
— And James O’Keefe, founder of the group that spearheaded the primary day testing of election procedures, said he did nothing illegal and hopes it spurs changes in state election laws.
“Our job is to inform the public and expose the fraud,” O’Keefe told the New Hampshire Sunday News. “What comes next is up to the people of New Hampshire and not me.”

Fox: Voter Fraud – Troy, NY

ACORN has addresses in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh…

“Michael LoPorto arrived at the Rensselaer County Courthouse in Troy, N.Y. on Tuesday for his trial, which accuses him of being part of a ‘massive’ voter fraud scheme.

“For a year now, LoPorto has steadfastly maintained his innocence, along with current Rensselaer County Democratic Elections Commissioner Edward McDonough, who refused to comment on the case Tuesday. They are the first indicted officials to be tried in a widespread investigation that has implicated eight Democrats, including county and city elected officials and party operatives. Four defendants have already pleaded guilty to a variety of charges, and what has already unfolded exposes just how easy it could be for political insiders to illegally manipulate the electoral system.

“Voters told Fox News they never filled out absentee ballot applications for the 2009 Working Families Party primary, and were later stunned to learn the applications were, in fact, turned in to the Board of Elections, with ballots cast in their names. Democratic candidates routinely try to secure the Working Families electoral line to obtain more votes in the general election. The party was associated with the now-defunct community group ACORN…”
