Jonah Goldberg remarked on the easy partnerships that form between despots and large corporations … the big guys have more assets to put into the new rules, including more programs to sell to the newest Hitler or Mussolini. The big guys can even help to write the new rules. The little guys can’t buy lawyers, lobbyists, or armies of data techs and secretaries, social “percolation” – the movement of former losers up and former winners down* – slows, and the culture moves into a static “Winner-Take-All” configuration. Whatever is on top, stays on top.

In the absence of environmental upheaval – weather, disease, quakes, floods, or invasions – winner-take-all is almost irresistible. Old cultures parallel the minds of old men and women: the more creative “pattern maker” in your right cortex withers and your problem solving consists of reapplying the things that worked for you twenty years ago. There can be exceptions to these changes but we also need to challenge their creativity before putting them in charge … is Mr. Speaker as robust as he once was? Is Dr. Ron?

The answer for either man is probably no. Through time, almost every individual shows you more of what you’ve already seen from him or her. And speculation exists that Dr. Ron would never form a third party because iot would guarantee Obama’s reelection and ruin the career of Dr. Rand. I suspect, however, that the old man loves himself more than he loves his son and a third party scheme is almost inevitable unless the old man thinks he and his followers have been treated fairly by the GOP. Buy-offs loom and may be worthwhile to silence Dr. Ron and get Obama out. They may also benefit the country if we can gain them without putting the old man in charge. Hell – buy him a D.C. statue.

Otherwise, Stage 3 (Winner-take-all) moves to Stage 4 – collapse, invasion, and recycling. Bose particles and social groups follow the same equations and in the case of human organizations, underlie exploration and survival in the face of environmental challenges.

Implication: “Republicans” should value “republicans” because they encourage and protect the percolation that our nation needs without taking ownership…it may be a matter of physics and, from physics, evolution.

A Note and References:

*”Percolation” is easily seen in the C&W Top 40, TV programs, and the NFL. Tim McGraw is not always at the top and Taylor Swift might be there for only a moment or a decade; a hundred or more programs may air before “Mash,” “Cheers,” or “Friends” appears; and attendance at a recent Broncos-Pittsburgh game was gloriously high because of a surprising kid named Tim Tebow.
