Sex: Abstinence Education Works

Via Bill Bennett,

The study released Monday involved 662 African American students…randomly assigned to go through one of the following: an eight-hour curriculum that encouraged them to delay having sex; an eight-hour program focused on teaching safe sex; an eight- or 12-hour program that did both; or an eight-hour program focused on teaching them other ways to be healthy, such as eating well and exercising.

Over the next two years, about 33 percent of the students who went through the abstinence program started having sex, compared with about 52 percent who were taught only safe sex. About 42 percent of the students who went through the comprehensive program started having sex, and about 47 percent of those who learned about other ways to be healthy did.

The abstinence program had no negative effects on condom use, which has been a major criticism of the abstinence approach.

Rohrer Unwelcome?

“Our campaign is committed to addressing each and every Republican committee that will open its doors to us. Perhaps you are unaware of statements made to the press by Chairman Gleason, or the actions of the majority of local committees across the state which have endorsed early. Despite our efforts to reach out to local committees, it has been clearly communicated candidate Rohrer is not welcome. Regarding the campaign’s neglect of ‘the voters’, please know we’ve taken our campaign on the road to engage directly with the electorate; we will have visited every county at least once by election day. Among the thousands of people that have crowed our events are super-voting Republicans to whom we have extended a personal invitation for them to come and meet Sam personally.
“Please know we have made it to every regional caucus to date, where Sam has addressed committee members. We will absolutely be at winter caucus on February 13; the event of ours you reference is a training conference for our volunteers to be held later that same day.
“If you are willing to buck the trend and open your committee to Mr. Rohrer, we would appreciate the opportunity schedule a date soon. If you have an questions, please feel free to respond to me directly, or reach me on my cell: 717.574.6989. Rebecca Coleman, State Field Director, www.SamRohrer.org

NY Post: “Rising Revolt in Pennsylvania”

Much as with the Massachusetts voters who sent Scott Brown to the Senate, Pennsylvanians are unhappy with one-party rule. “People are looking for balance” and for some serious “fiscal discipline,” Toomey notes.

And they’re unhappy with President Obama.

Why Palin Will Speak in Nashville…

“The soul of the Tea Party is the people who belong to it — everyday Americans who grow our food, run our small businesses, teach our children how to read, serve the less fortunate and fight our wars. They’re folks in small towns and cities across this nation who saw what was happening to our country and decided to get involved. Thank God for them. Many of these good Americans had never been involved in their government before, but now they attend town hall meetings and participate in online forums. They write letters to the editor. They sign up to be precinct leaders and run for local office and support other independent patriots. They have the courage to stand up and speak out.”

A Different Mission for NASA

The Obama administration’s roughly $19 billion fiscal 2011 budget proposal for NASA, which kills the Constellation program to send astronauts to the moon, includes the first phase of what could be more than $9 billion in new spending on robotic exploration missions and development of a heavy-lift rocket intended to penetrate deep into the solar system.”

WSJ: One of the greatest spend-while-you-can documents in American history.

“We now know why the White House leaked word of a three-year spending freeze on a few domestic accounts before this extravaganza was released. No one would have noticed such a slushy promise amid this glacier of spending. The budget reveals that overall federal outlays will reach $3.72 trillion in fiscal 2010, and keep rising to $3.834 trillion in 2011.

“As a share of the economy, outlays will reach a post-World War II record of 25.4% this year. This is a new modern spending landmark, up from 21% of GDP as recently as fiscal 2008, and far above the 40-year average of 20.7%.”

Illinois: Conservative Surges

“Illinois Gubernatorial Candidate and conservative Adam Andrzejewski rallied supporters in O’Fallon, Illinois this afternoon. It was a standing room only crowd.

While campaigning in O’Fallon the Andrzejewski team announced that Adam had just received the endorsement of the largest Chicago Polish paper today. And…. It was announced that Adam had surged to within two points in an internal poll conducted by a conservative organization in Washington DC. Andrzejewski was 8 points down earlier in the week in the Illinois race.

It may have been the endorsement by Lech Walesa that helped Andrzejewski surge in the latest polling. And this is despite the fact that the mainstream Chicago news mostly ignored Walesa’s historic endorsement.

Money Problems and High-Speed Rail

“The $8 billion in stimulus cash awarded to 13 high-speed rail corridors across the country may seem like a windfall, but there’s a catch. The money isn’t enough to finish any of the major projects.”

Paul Ryan: “Roadmap to Solvency”

Peter Orszag: “Congressman Paul Ryan recently put forward “A Roadmap for America’s Future 2.0,” a comprehensive entitlement-reform proposal. The CBO has certified that Ryan’s plan solves the long-term fiscal crisis. Ryan’s proposal has attracted the attention of the president and Office of Management and Budget director Peter Orszag.”

Sowell: Counting Jobs

“There was a recent flap because three different members of the Obama administration, on three different Sunday television talk shows, gave three widely differing estimates of how many jobs the president has created.
“That should not have been surprising, except as a sign of political sloppiness in not getting their stories together beforehand. They were simply doing what Barack Obama himself does — namely, just pulling numbers out of thin air. However, being more skilled at creating illusions, the president does it with more of an air of certainty, as if he has gone around and counted the new jobs himself.”

“Obama Surrendering Internet to Foreign Powers”

Via Newsmax & Barbara Oaks, Sunday, 31 Jan 2010 06:41 PM, By: Bradley A. Blakeman

“Without the ingenuity of America’s brightest minds and the investment of U.S. taxpayer dollars, there would be no Internet, as we now know it today.
“Now, the Obama administration has moved quietly to cede control of the Web from the United States to foreign powers….

“In an effort to show the world how inclusive, sharing, cooperative, and international America can be, the Obama administration set off on a plan to surrender control and key management of the Internet by the U.S. Department of Commerce and its agents.”

Fouad Ajami: “The Obama Spell Is Broken”

There is nothing surprising about where Mr. Obama finds himself today. He had been made by charisma, and political magic, and has been felled by it. If his rise had been spectacular, so, too, has been his fall. The speed with which some of his devotees have turned on him—and their unwillingness to own up to what their infatuation had wrought—is nothing short of astounding. But this is the bargain Mr. Obama had made with political fortune.”

BO Buys Nukes

President Barack Obama is seeking increased funding for nuclear weapons research and security programs next year, even as his administration promotes nonproliferation and has pledged to reduce the world’s stockpile of nuclear arms.

The administration on Monday asked Congress for more than $7 billion for activities related to nuclear weapons in the budget of the National Nuclear Security Administration, an increase of $624 million from the 2010 fiscal year.
