Justice Alito Was Right
By Judge Andrew P. Napolitano  - FOXNews.com (via SE Michigan Patriots)
“Despite claims made by the president, last week’s Supreme Court opinion on campaign finance specifically excludes foreign nationals and foreign-owned corporations from its ruling.”

Eugene Grace: “Alito’s Joe Wilson”

“See editorial in today’s (Friday 01/29/10) edition of The Wall Street Journal, page A13 by Randy Barnett who teaches constitutional law at Georgetown Law Center.

“Barnett’s editorial entitled “Obama Owes the High Court an Apology” makes the argument that President Obama acted in the same manner as Joe Wilson in the form of his rudeness to the Supreme Court.  Mr. Barnett believes that Mr. Obama owes the Court an apology. Maybe there is a little bit of Joe Wilson on both sides of the Obama-Alito moment.

“President Obama needs to remember that the Supreme Court, although small in number, is an EQUAL branch of our federal government.”

Obama’s Endorsement by the Marxist “New Party”

Thanks Aaron Klein!

“Each of us chooses our environments perhaps to a greater degree than we are molded by whatever environments we find. This is true for most living creatures. It  is certainly true for politicians, including Barack Obama.

“Erick Erickson assembled BO’s history with the New Party – a Marxist organization dedicated to taking over the Democrat party.  His history is at http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=26913 and http://archive.redstate.com/blogs/warner_todd_huston/2008/may/29/obama_sought_endorsement_of_marxist_third_party_in_1996. His present conduct continues that history.

Barone: Ds Falling

“Left-wing bloggers, liberal columnists and the stray Nobel Prize winner-turned polemicist are all urging Democrats in Congress to pass, somehow, some way, a health care bill, and many of them are calling for a second and even larger stimulus bill.

“But Democrats in Congress are replying, as politicians are wont to do when challenged by party wingers, that their name is on the ballot. New York Times editorialists can opine that the Massachusetts result had nothing to do with opposition to health care, but their life’s work is not in peril.”

Bob Guzzardi on PA GOP Endorsements

“Republican Lieutenant Governor candidate Joe Watkins on Friday voiced dismay over the process by which southeast Republican leaders endorsed a candidate for the race, calling it dangerously undemocratic, especially in the wake of a Massachusetts special election that revealed a deep-seated, anti-establishment feeling among voters.

“Watkins, in an interview and in a letter he said had been sent to GOP state committee members and county party chairs, was responding to the southeast caucus’ endorsement of Bucks County Commissioner Jim Cawley earlier this month. Unlike other regional Republican straw votes—which bring together candidates for a large swath of state committee members—the Philadelphia-area caucus has for years endorsed in a meeting that involves only the leaders of the five county chairs. The results of those meetings are typically closely echoed in the more official state committee endorsement votes. That recent meeting yielded an endorsement of Cawley that the caucus said was on a “solid majority” vote, though it was not more specific, a situation that led Chester County Commissioner Carol Aichele, another candidate, to voice her dismay earlier this week at leaks that followed the endorsement.

In his letter, Watkins, a favorite of grassroots conservatives who are voicing displeasure at the prospect of having Cawley on the party’s gubernatorial ticket, cited an earlier pa2010.com report in decrying the latest endorsement process.’

“‘In the last week, some of my supporters in the Southeast counties have called to re-affirm their support,’ Watkins wrote. ‘Some said that they were never canvassed. Others said that they were called but when they said that they supported me—were told they could only choose between Cawley and Aichele.’

“‘Two days ago the voters of Massachusetts sent a message not only to the Democrat[ic] Party but to anyone seeking public office,” Watkins added. “The voters—whether Republican or Democrat or importantly Independent—want an end to business as usual. They want government officials who will listen to their concerns and views whether it’s about run away spending or the choice of a party’s nominee. Lest we forget, just last November in a special election, our party lost a solidly Republican seat in upstate New York because a few party leaders decided—they alone knew best who should be the candidate.’

“Watkins, who along with Cawley and Aichele is seen as one of the leading Lt. Gov. contenders, said following a process more respectful of rank-and-file opinions was critical to winning the Governor’s Mansion in November.

“‘We must have the very best ticket with the broadest appeal to disgruntled Democrats, independents and enthusiastic Republicans,’ he wrote. ‘We can only have that ‘grass roots’ enthusiasm when those workers who do the hard work needed for victory have had their say and are treated fairly.’

‘Michael Meehan, the Philadelphia Republican leader who chairs the southeast caucus, did not immediately return a message left at his office.

“In a brief interview, Watkins said he would have appreciated the opportunity to address southeast Republicans before a vote was made, and that he sent the letter to GOP leaders to voice that sentiment.

“I wanted people to know that I believe in the American process, and I think it’s a great one when people have a chance to decide,” he said. “Certainly what happened in Massachusetts this past week sends a strong message that the people will ultimately decide who they want to lead them.”

Gerlach: “No Pork”

Thanks Bob Guzzardi!

“Citizens Against Government Waste defines pork: “‘pork project’ is a line-item in an appropriations or authorization bill that designates funds for a specific purpose in circumvention of established budgetary procedures.  To qualify as pork, a project must meet one of seven criteria that were developed in 1991 by CAGW and the Congressional Porkbusters Coalition.

“Attached is the No Pork Pledge, sometimes called, No Earmark Pledge, from Citizens against Government Waste. In my opinion, every candidate for US House and Senate needs to take this pledge if Debts and Deficits and Budgetary Spending is to be addressed in a meaningful way.” Jim Gerlach

The Politico: National GOP – “No Purity Test”

“Republicans averted an ideological showdown here Friday, passing a tepid party resolution in place of a candidate ‘purity test.’

“Rejecting a plan that would have required GOP candidates to meet at least eight of 10 policy questions to receive national support and funding, the Republican National Committee unanimously approved a rule that only “urges” party leaders to support nominees who back the party’s platform.

“The author of the original proposal, Indiana National Republican Committeeman James Bopp, agreed to withdraw his resolution in the face of overwhelming opposition and backed the watered-down language.

“Yet even after the compromise was reached, tempers flared between Republicans on opposing sides of the issue — vividly illustrating the lingering divide between the party’s conservative activist wing and pragmatic establishment wing.”  Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0110/32242.html

John Mauldin: “We are so screwed…”

“Our immersion in the details of crises that have arisen over the past eight centuries and in data on them has led us to conclude that the most commonly repeated and most expensive investment advice ever given in the boom just before a financial crisis stems from the perception that ‘this time is different.’ (Carmen M. Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff. This Time is Different. $18 at Amazon or a 124 pp. pdf at http://www.economics.harvard.edu/files/faculty/51_This_Time_Is_Different.pdf)

“Rather than offering up theories on how to deal with the current financial crisis, the authors show us what happened in over 250 historical crises in 66 countries. And they offer some very clear ideas on how this current crisis might play out. Sadly, the lesson is not a happy one. There are no good endings once you start down a deleveraging path. As I have been writing for several years, we now are faced with choosing from among several bad choices, some being worse than others. This Time is Different offers up some ideas as to which are the worst choices.

Ralph Peters, NY Post: “Nightmare in the Middle East”

“Whatever planet Earth may find in short supply in 2010, violence and misrule will remain abundant, from the most-recent round of Muslim-vs.-Christian massacres in Nigeria to Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez’s delight in unleashing his thugs on students marching for freedom.

“But no region — not even sub-Saharan Africa — competes with the greater Middle East when it comes to wanton savagery, thwarted opportunities and the danger posed to innocent populations around the world.”

John Bolton: Obama’s Next Three Years

John R. Bolton, who served as the United States permanent representative at the United Nations from 2005 to 2006, is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

The president isn’t interested in foreign policy, but his ideas and his approach mark him as the first “post-American” president.”…

“First, Obama has no particular interest in foreign and national-security policy. That is not what he has spent his professional and political career, such as it is, doing, and it is not where his passions lie. There can be no question that the challenges of remaking America’s health-care, financial, and energy-production systems claim the bulk of Obama’s attention.

“Second, Obama does not see the rest of the world as dangerous or threatening to America. He has made it clear by his actions as president that he does not want to engage in a “global war against terrorism.” The rising power of other nations, creeds, and ideologies, however unsavory, pose no grievous challenge to which the United States must rise. We are not at a Dean Acheson–style, post–World War II “present at the creation” moment. Therefore, Obama reasons, why behave in reactive, outmoded ways when there are many more interesting and pressing domestic projects to nurture?

Obama’s America need only be restrained, patient, and deferential.”

From www.Philly.com: Philadelphia Patronage Suit

Board of Revision of Taxes (BRT), an alleged nest for patronage jobs, and recently taken over by the Mayor’s office.)

“In May, city voters will be asked to kill the BRT and replace it with a new agency to handle appeals. Assessments would be the responsibility of the Mayor’s Office.

“The Nutter administration has already taken control of the agency’s operations, with the BRT board’s approval. Stretton argues that the BRT can’t do that, and he has asked the court to overturn the deal. City lawyers say it’s perfectly legal.

“Common Pleas Court Judge Gary F. Divito did not rule on the request for a temporary order blocking the BRT takeover and gave the lawyers until next week to submit written arguments. No new hearing has been scheduled.

“Fighting the takeover is a group of BRT clerical workers who got their jobs through connections with the city Democratic and Republican Parties.”

NCPA: Ten Cool Global Warming Policies
“What should be done about the threat of global warming? Unfortunately, many proposals — including mandatory limits on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions — would be much more costly to society than the danger it seeks to avert. Fortunately, there are policies that could be adopted that are desirable in their own right and are commendable, even if there were no threat of global warming. These policies would reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy efficiency, reduce harms associated with global warming or increase the world’s capabilities to deal with climate-change-associated problems. Here are 10 of them…” http://www.ncpa.org/pdfs/st321.pdf

Steyn: More Washington

“The world turns.
“In Indonesia, the principal of a Muslim boarding school in Tangerang who is accused of impregnating a 15-year-old student says the DNA test will prove that a malevolent genie is the real
father.
“In New Zealand, a German tourist, Herr Hans Kurt Kubus, has been jailed for attempting to board a plane at Christchurch with 44 live lizards in his underpants.
“In Britain, a research team at King’s
College, London, has declared that the female “G-spot” does not, in fact, exist.
“In France a group of top gynecologists led by M. Sylvain Mimoun has dismissed the findings, and said what do you expect if you ask a group of Englishmen to try to find a woman’s erogenous zone.
“But in America Barack Obama is talking.
“Talking, talking, talking.”

As the Republican chairman of the Game and Fisheries Committee, he is an outspoken proponent of commonsense conservation policies that respect private property and protects the rights of tens of thousands of hunters and anglers. Because of his uncompromising support for Second Amendment freedoms he has earned the consistent backing of sportsmen and gun owners. (And, hopefully, from those interested in freedom of speech!)
