Scott Brown: Republican State Senator from Wrentham

Brown 50, Coakley 46…. http://www.bostonherald.com/news/politics/view/20100114brown-out_poll_shows_scott_brown_trumping_martha_coakley/srvc=home&position=0

“I DIDN’T grow up with all the advantages in life. My mom was on welfare for a time, but I had the support of a loving family and good friends and neighbors. I don’t have all the advantages in this race either, and that’s fine by me. Being the underdog has taught me to work harder, and to appreciate the opportunities of our state and our country.

“I’m running because more of our people are unemployed today than ever before. Public debt has reached $12 trillion and counting, and Washington politicians want to borrow trillions more. Terrorists want to strike our country again, and they will do so if we let down our guard. We have fighting forces in two theaters of war, and those men and women need our support.

“Like everyone else, I want to see more Americans with good health care coverage. I like what we achieved in Massachusetts. It’s not perfect, but nearly everyone is now covered by a private insurance policy – not a government policy. I hope other states follow our example.”

Red State: Steve Welch

Steve Welch runs a phone bank for Scott Brown and locally is sometimes called “Donut Boy”….

“Because Congressman Gerlach is running for re-election, I’m reposting this article as there has been so much talk of the NRCC Young Guns program.

“I can now confidently confirm that PA-6 Congressional candidate, Steve Welch, is indeed a RINO. Welch’s voter history shows dates and party affliliation. On 11/02/2004 he was a Republican, but changed on on 11/07/2006 to the Democrat party until he decided to run for the PA-7 House seat in 2009. He was chased out of the PA-7 race and switched to the PA-6 House race for Congressman Jim Gerlach’s seat against conservative Republican State Representative Curt Schroder.

“On May 19, 2009, it shows Welch as a Republican.

“The image of Welch’s voting history can be found here.”

Rohrer Ignored?

Thanks Bob Guzzardi!

“When U.S. Rep. Jim Gerlach withdrew from the governor’s race last week, Republican leaders said the party could now unite behind the presumptive nominee, Attorney General Tom Corbett.

“For supporters of state Rep. Sam Rohrer, including 175 people who turned out last night at a fire hall in this rural area of Berks County, that apparent dismissal of Rohrer’s candidacy smacked of more than disrespect for the veteran legislator, best known for his long crusade against school property taxes.

“For a network of antitax activists across the state, it signaled that the GOP leadership was also ignoring what they see as the political mood of 2010, one more against big government than at any other time in years.”

Charter Schools – Demand Up and Up

“As more low-income and minority parents seek to remove their children from traditional public schools that chronically underperform, waiting lists for America’s public charter schools have grown dramatically, a report released today reveals. According to The Center for Education Reform (CER), an average of 239 children are waiting to enter each charter school in America, demonstrating a 21 percent surge in parental demand for charters over last year….

“65 percent of U.S. charter schools have waiting lists, up from 59 percent in 2008, and some schools’ waiting lists are more than three times the size of the schools themselves. The average charter school size is 372 students and it is estimated that the number of students on waiting lists would fill another 5,000 charter schools.”

Chester E. (Checker) Finn: “A Centrist Education Package”

“…actually enacting such a thing, not as one-time money like the stimulus package, but as part of the infrastructure of federal education policy for the long haul, will require major rethinking on both sides of the aisle. Democrats will have to agree to reward educational success and intervene forcefully in instances of failure. The former could mean shifting monies away from what have historically been deemed the “neediest” schools and districts, while the latter entails actions that teachers’ unions typically abhor. (So does rewarding exceptionally effective teachers, another oft-voiced administration priority.) For their part, GOP lawmakers (many of whom have been critical of NCLB) would need to buy into national (okay, “common”) standards and tests, to tie NCLB accountability to them, and to recognize that Washington is now charting the basic direction of U.S. education and prescribing its goals, norms, and standards.”

Chinese Missile Defense

Bought with WalMart dollars…

“BEIJING — China said late Monday that it had successfully tested the nation’s first land-based missile defense system, announcing the news in a brief dispatch by Xinhua, the official news agency. “The test is defensive in nature and is not targeted at any country,” the item said.

“Even if news accounts on Tuesday did not provide details about the test — and whether it destroyed its intended target — Chinese and Western analysts say there is no mistaking that the timing of the test, coming amid Beijing’s fury over American arms sales to Taiwan, was largely aimed at the White House.

“In recent days, state media have been producing a torrent of articles condemning the sale of Patriot air defense equipment to Taiwan. China views the self-ruled island as a breakaway province, separated since the civil war of the 1940s, and sees arms sales as interference in an internal matter. “

Calling China’s Bluff: Google, Iron Ore, & Arms Sales to Taiwan

“The third example of calling China’s bluff came last week when the US defence department went ahead with arms sales to the self-ruled island of Taiwan. China had ratcheted up its rhetoric ahead of the sale. It had already cancelled military-to-military ties. This week, Beijing showed off its military prowess by successfully testing – without warning – an advanced missile interception system. The timing seemed calculated to show Beijing’s displeasure. But the odds are the US will press on with arms sales to Taiwan regardless. Once again, Beijing “may have overplayed its hand.”

Krauthammer: “The Fall of Obama”

Mark Steyn on Guns, from 10 Years Ago

Thanks Lou,

“The Conservatives’ big mistake between 1979 and 1997 was an almost willfully obtuse failure to understand that giving citizens more personal responsibility isn’t something that extends just to their income and consumer choices; it also applies to their communities and their policing arrangements. If you have one without the other, you end up with modern Britain: a materially prosperous society in which the sense of frustration and impotence is palpable, and you’re forced to live with a level of endless property crime most Americans would regard as unacceptable.”

Stimulus a Loser

All that new asphalt…

“The results are in, and last year’s $787 billion stimulus not only failed to do what it was supposed to do, but it has also turned out to be one of the worst investments in economic history.

“Remember the debate in 2008 over the bailouts then being put together by the Treasury, the Fed and the Democratic Congress? Proponents often raised the possibility that any bailout would make money for taxpayers.

“Didn’t work that way. As we’ve discovered, the American people aren’t just saddled with the ongoing costs of the various and sundry stimulus programs. They’re also taking huge losses in doing so.”

George Will on Health Care: “Rock in the Road”

“Although Democrats think their health care legislation faces smooth sailing to implementation, there is a rock dead ahead — a constitutional challenge to the legislation’s core. Democrats who assume it is constitutional to make it mandatory for Americans to purchase health insurance should answer some questions…”

ACORN Fragments

Stage 4: Cut off resources and large organizations break into their components for resurrection or recycling.

“California ACORN has broken away from its embattled parent organization to form a new nonprofit group, a move that observers say might foreshadow other defections that would seriously undermine one of the nation’s largest and most politically powerful community organizations.
“The new group will have the same mission, will be staffed by many of the same employees who worked for ACORN, and will be funded by most of the same donors, said Amy Schur, the former head organizer for California ACORN.”

Goldman Sachs, AIG Bailout “Worse than You Think”

“The Goldman Sachs-AIG scandal may be worse than we think. Former New York Fed President and current Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is being castigated for paying off AIG’s counterparties – Goldman foremost among them – 100 cents on the dollar and then keeping these payments secret. But it seems likely that Goldman actually got much more than 100%. What is worse, Goldman may have received this windfall by trading on information that was deliberately withheld from the public.”

Sarah and Glenn: “The Trust Thing…”

“Can you survive/succeed outside of the system?” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0srXvsRp8A

From The Politico

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin portrayed herself as a reluctant warrior for freedom on Tuesday during an hour-long interview with Fox News host Glenn Beck.

“Despite having just signed a multi-year deal with Fox that will require her to spend time in New York, Palin said she would ‘be perfectly happy to go back to Wasilla, Alaska, with my five children and grandson and raise a happy, healthy family and love the great outdoors and do the things we do in Alaska.’

“But, Palin said that she continues to seek the public spotlight because she believes ‘that in some capacity I can help this great nation.’

“‘I’m going to be willing to sacrifice and change some things and my lifestyle in order to serve,’ she said. ‘It doesn’t have to mean, though, top dog. That doesn’t have to entail having any kind of title.’”

Palin Skips CPAC, Goes to TEA Party

“Gov. Palin has our admiration and we are disappointed that she will not be able to attend CPAC this year, but hope she will attend in the future.”

Meanwhile, Palin is planning to speak at an event Feb. 4-6 at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tenn., organized by the Tea Party Nation.

“Tea Party Nation President Judson Phillips, named one of Tennessee’s top 25 political players in 2009, was one of the original tea-party organizers in last February following CNBC anchor Rick Santelli’s now famous outburst from the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He has helped organize numerous tea parties and mobilized Tennessee taxpayers in the last year with rallies reaching crowds of more than 10,000.

“Palin has been confirmed as a speaker at the events, as has WND founder Joseph Farah….

“The event also will feature Rep Michele Bachmann, R- Minn.; Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.; WND columnist Judge Roy Moore; Phil Valentine, popular radio talk-show host and author of The Conservative Handbook; and Fox News Political Analyst Angela McGlowan.”

Myth of the Anti-Muslim Backlash

“The Council on American-Islamic Relations warns that making an issue of Islamic terror incites ‘hate crimes’ against innocent Muslims, but federal data disprove that. And commendably, the Obama administration is ignoring the Islamist pressure group’s latest bluff.

“The White House has added top CAIR donor Saudi Arabia to a list of 14 mostly Muslim nations whose travelers will undergo extra airport-security screening in the wake of the Christmas Day airliner attack by a Muslim passenger. CAIR slammed the new policy as ‘across-the-board profiling’ and griped ‘Muslims will pay the price for this one.’”

UN & Gun Confiscation

SE Michigan Patriots…

“U.S. agrees to timetable for UN Gun Ban
“The United Nations and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are moving forward with their plan to confiscate your guns.
“The United States joined 152 other countries in support of the Arms Trade Treaty Resolution, which establishes the dates for the 2012 UN conference intended to attack American sovereignty by stripping Americans of the right to keep and bear arms….
“Former United Nation’s ambassador John Bolton has cautioned gun owners about the Arms Trade Treaty and says the UN ‘is trying to act as though this is really just a treaty about international arms trade between nation states, but there’s no doubt that the real agenda here is domestic firearms control.’“
