Three Dems Whom We Might Have…
“Senator Ben Nelson, Democrat of Nebraska, says he is not sure he is ready to help a Democratic health care proposal clear even the most preliminary hurdle: gaining the 60 votes his party’s leaders need to open debate on the measure later this week.
“Two of his fellow Democrats, Senators Mary L. Landrieu of Louisiana and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, are proving tough sells as well, raising the prospect that one or perhaps all three of them could scuttle the bill before the fight over it even begins on the Senate floor.”

Pat Buchanan: “Are We at War—or Not?”
“For if we are at war, why is Khalid Sheikh Mohammed headed for trial in federal court in the Southern District of New York? Why is he entitled to a presumption of innocence and all of the constitutional protections of a U.S. citizen?
Is it possible we have done an injustice to this man by keeping him locked up all these years without trial? For that is what this trial implies — that he may not be guilty.”

V.F. Patriots and the Harrisburg Legislature: Counting Coup
Two truckers, three women, and one creaking psychologist called on the PA legislators in their offices, hallways, and chambers. Some of our hosts hid behind staffers, in offices, or “in session.” Others were forthright, available, polite, and open even in areas of disagreement about federal intrusiveness, spending, tolls on I80, healthcare, education, and the disconnection between voters and elected officials.
We made one delivery to the office of Philadelphia’s renowned but unavailable Babette Josephs. We, however, crossed paths with her as she sat outside the legislative hall. She made no eye contact with us but held a stack of papers on her lap with our card on top which meant that she also had an acorn from Valley Forge.
A second staffer, an attorney who worked for the House Speaker, criticized us for not knowing the number of a bill on states’ rights, one held up in the desk of Ms. Josephs. We doubled back downstairs, got a copy of the bill – all three pages of it – and delivered both the bill and an acorn to the attorney’s receptionist. We delivered seven such acorns…with the statement, “This one is from Valley Forge, please take care of it.” The Plains Indians called it “counting coup…” We call it patriotism.
(There is risk in these adventures: at times we felt like friends or raiders and at other times, that we were bullets fired by one legislator at another or set up for execution by still another.)
Mother Russia: Putin vs. Medvedev
“The Russian president Dmitry Medvedev delivered his annual state-of-the-union-address last week in front of the country’s political and business elite. His speech built on a text he released two months before, “Forward Russia”, in which he set out radical plans to modernise Russia’s economy and society.
“Taken together, these interventions confirm that Mr Medvedev is not a figurehead who will quietly step aside for his predecessor and erstwhile mentor Vladimir Putin, the current prime minister who is widely suspected of plotting a return to the presidency in 2012.
“This conflict is about much more than personal ambitions. We are seeing a growing split within the ruling regime on ideology and policy…”

Palin: An Antidepressant…
Liberals screech about fairness, consult constantly with one another, scheme in committees, and spread embarrassing gossip. Some have called them “prissy,” others “depressed” and there is evidence that admits to the overlay of collectivism, depression, and the reliance on words as “truth.” They naturally find that Sarah Palin has insufficient “gravitas” to be President because she not a moping wreck.
Sarah annoys them not because she is smart, honest, healthy, a mother, a traditionalist, and beautiful but because she not depressed! They conclude that she would be fine selling Chevies or leading NFL cheers but not managing our nation’s course. And Sarah’s obvious reaction – instead of pretending to be depressed, muting the vigor of her actions, and waiting to take her turn – should be pride not only in her mind and her aim but also her legs…
Monica Crowley: “A What Now? Presidency”
Thanks, Lou Flanagan: “When a ringing telephone once interrupted her train of thought, American author Dorothy Parker reportedly exclaimed, “What fresh hell is this?” It’s a sentiment now shared by most Americans when they think about the Obama administration.”

Thanksgiving: WalMart to Be Open
Another stampede, another crushed employee, and another sub bought for the Chinese.
Whose Money?
Limit them to funds in proportion to the number of voters in their district and to the taxes collected from that district….

Our political futures: “I’m not done!”
Nancy sat on a bar stool, a foul odor smoking out from her. The guy on the next stool asked, “What are you doing?” “I’m going to the bathroom.” “Go home and clean up!” But I’m not done yet.” He put away ten drinks and she didn’t smell or look quite so bad.
