11/14/09 March on Harrisburg

2500 avid ranter-chanters and a half-dozen members of the PA Legislature met on the Capitol steps. (I hooked a pass with Paula Stiles and her friends to meet privately with one representative and gave him a Valley Forge acorn instead of a business card… “This is from Valley Forge, please take care of it!”)… Several magnificent talks …”Hi Caliber” sang patriotic rap tunes as some of our least likely members grinned, boogied, and waved flags…four tractor trucks circled the blocks and blasted their horns…several drivers spoke about fuel and tolls on I80… the Irish restaurant learned from us that several thousand might follow (“NOBODY told us!”)…a legislator said to me, “YOU’RE Dead Cats!”…Navy veteran Mark Driver carried the American flag … an old friend and I surprised each other and reminded me that a good hug means far more than a handshake or business card. Finally, a major boost as we left the demonstration: a Freedom Works representative announced seminars about using Alinsky against liberals. I gave the same talk to the Valley Forge Patriots last July…will Freedom Works next give out Valley Forge acorns or picket Republican committees?

Downers: A mike (or a computer keyboard!) elicits a near-universal reflex for rambling too long…we all could have used some ground thumping about climate and energy from former PA representative, John Peterson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1E5U4oWxr0&feature=channel , … Dick Armey couldn’t attend because of weather… 90% of our representatives could have attended but didn’t…likewise for all but six of the blacks in this Commonwealth…the two largest buildings  facing the Capitol are said to be teachers’ unions … the rally script sometimes resembled last year’s Volvo ad…talk, talk, talk, then dance and sing before some more talk-talk-talk. As Jim Gerlach advised in D.C., “Meet the other side”….we did little of that in Hbg but might on November 17th (See below). And a good question from a PA legislator: “We’ve seen waves of populism before, how long can we count on you this time?”

Irony: Our representatives all have Think Pads on their legislative desks…

Finally, a guy with a serious lens photographed lots of us and we got a short item in the Harrisburg Patriot News: http://www.pennlive.com/news/patriotnews/index.ssf?/base/news/1258251914280450.xml&coll=1

Disgusted Democrat: 11/16/09, 4:35 AM. WLW 700AM, Cincinnati

We have three options, all of them neglected: 1) Trial for malfeasance, misfeasance, or nonfeasance, 2) recall elections, and 3) constitutional amendments. He also wondered why none of these things are happening…

A Different ACORN and Financial Collapse

Via Lou Flanagan. Note that BHO and Hillary were two of the largest recipients of contributions from Fannie and Freddie…

“Fannie and Freddie also acquired $2.2 trillion in subprime loans and private securities backed by subprime loans from 1997 to 2007. Acorn and the other advocacy groups succeeded at getting Congress to mandate “innovative and flexible” lending practices such as higher debt ratios and creative definitions of income. And the serious delinquency rate on Fannie and Freddie’s $1.5 trillion in high-risk loans was 10.3% as of Sept. 30, 2009.

“This is about seven times the delinquency rate on the GSEs’ traditional loans. Fifty percent of the high-risk loans are estimated to be CRA loans, with much of the remainder useful to the GSEs in meeting their affordable-housing goals.

“The flood of CRA and affordable-housing loans with loosened underwriting standards, combined with declining mortgage interest rates—to 5% in 2003 from 10% in early 1991—resulted in a massive increase in borrowing capacity and fueled a house price bubble of unprecedented magnitude over the period 1997-2006.

“Now this history may repeat itself as many of the same community groups are pushing Congress to expand CRA to cover all mortgage lenders, credit unions, insurance companies and others financial industry segments. Are we about to set the stage for another catastrophe?  More at:

Seniors to Be Hit in Proposed Health Care

Or Bob Samuelson on “Obama’s Malpractice”: “There is an air of absurdity to what is mistakenly called “health care reform.” Everyone knows that the United States faces massive governmental budget deficits as far as calculators can project, driven heavily by an aging population and uncontrolled health costs. Recovering slowly from a devastating recession, it’s widely agreed that, though deficits should not be cut abruptly (lest the economy resume its slump), a prudent society would embark on long-term policies to control health costs, reduce government spending, and curb massive future deficits. The administration estimates these at $9 trillion from 2010 to 2019. The president and all his top economic advisers proclaim the same cautionary message.

So, what do they do? Just the opposite.”

Mark Steyn: Palin Made Six Mistakes

“If you wonder why American newspapering is dying, consider this sign-off:

“AP writers Matt Apuzzo, Sharon Theimer, Tom Raum, Rita Beamish, Beth Fouhy, H. Josef Hebert, Justin D. Pritchard, Garance Burke, Dan Joling and Lewis Shaine contributed to this report.

“Wow. That’s ten “AP writers” plus Calvin Woodward, the AP writer whose twinkling pen honed the above contributions into the turgid sludge of the actual report. That’s eleven writers for a 695-word report. What on? Obamacare? The Iranian nuke program? The upcoming trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed?

“No, the Associated Press assigned eleven writers to “fact-check” Sarah Palin’s new book, and in return the eleven fact-checkers triumphantly unearthed six errors. That’s 1.8333333 writers for each error. What earth-shattering misstatements did they uncover for this impressive investment? “Stand well back:”

Jack Kelly: Our PC Army

Big possibilities: 1) Peaceful times create promotions for guys who cross “t”s and dot “i”s. In war, we have to find the Patraeus, Patton, or Sherman who will do the job and, 2) certain antidepressants when combined with alcohol create mice – and psychiatrists – willing to bell cats or fearlessly go to Allah.

Kelly, nonetheless, makes sense about the PC manners in our military…

“Some liberal journalists and Obama administration officials say they cannot yet identify a motive for Maj. Hasan’s murder spree at Fort Hood. This is much more than a failure to connect the dots. It’s like looking west from Denver on a bright and sunny day, and claiming to be unable to see the Rocky Mountains.”
