Corkery & Maher, WSJ: Harrisburg Bankruptcy
“HARRISBURG, Pa.—Pennsylvania’s capital city filed for bankruptcy protection from creditors Wednesday, in a case closely watched by other cities and towns looking for ways out of dire financial troubles.
“Harrisburg’s filing came after a faction of the city council repeatedly rejected a state-backed plan that called for selling or leasing assets to pay down debt.
“Pennsylvania lawmakers were expected to pass legislation next week that essentially would amount to a state takeover of the city’s financial recovery plan. But late Tuesday, a divided Harrisburg city council voted to file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection, becoming the second city to file this year… ‘
Vincent & Klein, NY Post: Ground Zero Mosque … $1.7 Million in Back Rent
“Con Ed has given the Ground Zero mosque an ultimatum: Pay the $1.7 million you owe in back rent, or we’ll terminate your lease and take back our property.
“Con Ed and mosque developer Park51 have an unusual, uneasy alliance, sharing ownership of a site slated to be one of the most controversial projects in city history.
“The utility owns a former substation on the western half of the property, at 51 Park Place, and the mosque developers own a five-story building on the eastern half. The buildings were connected years ago and used to house a Burlington Coat Factory store.
Park51, which leases the substation from Con Ed, wants the two buildings so it can knock both down and build a $100 million, 15-story community center.
“But the plan hit a major obstacle in August when Con Ed raised the rent from $2,750 a month, a rate set in 1972, to $47,437 a month, retroactive to July 31, 2008, The Post has learned…”
Mark Steyn, NRO: Crisis of Decadence
“As I said, these are more or less conventional symptoms of geopolitical decline: Great powers still go through the motions but increasingly ineffectually. But what the Council on Foreign Relations types often miss is that, for the man in the street, decline can be very pleasant. In Britain, France, Spain, and the Netherlands, the average citizen lives better than he ever did at the height of Empire. Today’s Europeans enjoy more comfortable lives, have better health, and take more vacations than their grandparents did. The state went into decline, but its subjects enjoyed immense upward mobility. Americans could be forgiven for concluding that, if this is “decline,” bring it on.
“But it’s not going to be like that for the United States: Unlike Europe, geopolitical decline and mass downward mobility will go hand in hand. Indeed, they’re already underway. ..”
Jake Tapper/Luis Martinez, ABC News: BO Sent 100 to Uganda
Approved by Congress May 24, 2010….
“Two days ago President Obama authorized the deployment to Uganda of approximately 100 combat-equipped U.S. forces to help regional forces “remove from the battlefield” – meaning capture or kill – Lord’s Resistance Army leader Joseph Kony and senior leaders of the LRA.
“The forces will deploy beginning with a small group and grow over the next month to 100. They will ultimately go to Uganda, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the permission of those countries…
The act passed both houses of Congress with overwhelming support on May 10, 2010 with language that included “providing political, economic, military, and intelligence support for viable multilateral efforts to protect civilians from the Lord’s Resistance Army.”
KleinOnLine: Soros’ Fingerprints…
“TEL AVIV — An influential “crisis management organization” that boasts billionaire George Soros as a member of its executive board recently recommended the U.S. deploy a special advisory military team to Uganda to help with operations and run an intelligence platform.
“The president-emeritus of that organization, the International Crisis Group, is the principal author of Responsibility to Protect, the military doctrine used by Obama to justify the U.S.-led NATO campaign in Libya.
“Soros’ own Open Society Institute is one of only three nongovernmental funders of the Global Centre for Responsibility to Protect, a doctrine that has been cited many times by activists urging intervention in Uganda.
“Authors and advisers of the Responsibility to Protect doctrine, including a center founded and led by Samantha Power, the National Security Council special adviser to Obama on human rights, also helped to found the International Criminal Court.
“Several of the doctrine’s main founders also sit on boards with Soros, who is a major proponent of the doctrine.
“Soros himself maintains close ties to oil interests in Uganda. His organizations have been the leading efforts purportedly to facilitate more transparency in Uganda’s oil industry, which is being tightly controlled by the country’s leadership…”
Intriguing idea from a Mike Savage caller at 4:20am … the US is in Uganda to protect not oil access but the hegemony of the US dollar in the oil markets…
Aaron Klein, KleinOnLine: Brookfield: Zuccotti Park, Windplants, Relatives, and $135.8 Million
“Brookfield, meanwhile, is a Toronto, Ontario-based asset management company that manages a global portfolio of assets valued at over $120 billion. The firm’s assets boast not only renewable power generation but also real state (sic), including some of Manhattan’s most famous skyline buildings.
“Brookfield also happens to own of Zuccotti Park, the park where the Occupy Wall Street protesters are currently holed up. The protesters have reportedly been making a mess of the park, which is named after Brookfield’s co-chairman, John Zuccotti.
“According to the Wall Street Journal, Brookfield wanted the protesters removed, but Bloomberg’s New York Police Department urged the private company to allow the protests to stay in the park.
“There isn’t much Brookfield can do to evict the protesters, since the park’s charter allows for 24-hour public access.
“Earlier this week, KleinOnline was first to report that Mayor Bloomberg’s long-term girlfriend, Dianna L. Taylor, serves as one of nine members of Brookfield’s board of directors.
“The loan to Brookfield is just the latest example of controversial handouts to ‘green’ companies with White House ties…”
Big Journalism: Mainstream Media Involved
“Big Journalism has learned that the Occupy Washington DC movement is working with well-known media members to craft its demands and messaging while these media members report on the movement. Someone has made the emails from the Occupy D.C. email distro public and searchable. The names in the list are a veritable who’s who in media.
“Journolist 2.0 includes well known names such as MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan, Rolling Stone’s Matt Tiabbi who both are actively participating; involvement from other listers such as Bill Moyers and Glenn Greenwald plus well-known radicals like Noam Chomsky, remains unclear. The list also includes a number of Occupy organizers, such as one of the Occupy Wall Street main organizers Kevin Zeese…”
GatewayPundit: American Nazi Party Supports OWS
“The foremost authority on National Socialism in America has this to say about “Occupy” [ANP leader Rocky Suhayda -ed.] :
“What is really MISSING – is the “MOVEMENT” from these popular protests – its time to pull WN heads out of their collective ass’s, and JOIN IN the attack on Judeo-Capitalism…”
Also Communist Party, USA…
Michael Ledeen, PJM: What Iran Does
“…If you thought — as so many of the overnight experts have declared — that there was anything new about Iranian terrorists operating on American soil, forget it. Iranian agents have been busy in this country for quite some time. Just ask the FBI, who within the past few years broke up a very worrisome group of radical Muslims in Washington, D.C., who were receiving weapons from the Iranians. We have been aware of Iranian sleeper cells in the United States, often working in tandem with narcotics traffickers (Iran, after all, is very busy at the Afghan source of the global opium supply), for many years, and it’s not surprising that DEA had such a strong grip on the investigation. Surely the Bureau and the Agency were not surprised to find Iran in cahoots with (what the Iranians thought was) drug runners in the United States…”
Victor Davis Hanson, NRO: “Predator-in-Chief”
“We are in a long war against radical Islamic terrorism. The struggle seems almost similar to the on-again/off-again ordeals of the past — such as the French-English Hundred Years War of the 14th and 15th centuries, or the Thirty Years War between Catholics and Protestants in the 17th century.
“In these kinds of drawn-out conflicts, final victory will go to the side that responds best to new challenges. And we’ve seen a lot of those since 9/11, when the United States was caught unaware and apparently ill-equipped to face the threat of radical Islamic terrorists hijacking our passenger jets.
“Even when we adjusted well to the 9/11 tactics, there were new threats, such as suicide bombers and roadside improvised explosive devices that seemed to nullify American technological and material advantages.
“But America is once again getting the upper hand in this long war against Middle Eastern terrorists, with the use of Predator-drone targeted assassinations to which the terrorists have not yet developed an answer…”
Also, WSJ, November 2020: China’s 25 Drones –
“ZHUHAI, China—China is ramping up production of unmanned aerial vehicles in an apparent bid to catch up with the U.S. and Israel in developing technology that is considered the future of military aviation.
“Western defense officials and experts were surprised to see more than 25 different Chinese models of the unmanned aircraft, known as UAVs, on display at this week’s Zhuhai air show in this southern Chinese city. It was a record number for a country that unveiled its first concept UAVs at the same air show only four years ago, and put a handful on display at the last one in 2008.
“The apparent progress in UAVs is a stark sign of China’s ambition to upgrade its massive military as its global political and economic clout grows. ..”
David Limbaugh, TownHall: Obama Will Not Be Deterred
BO knows that he’s running out of time….
“If it’s not narcissism, what explains President Obama’s habit of demanding something against the people’s will, being rejected, refusing to take no for an answer and berating the public he is pretending to represent?
“We saw it over and over with Obamacare. By now, it’s part of our national lore that he delivered some 54 speeches to sell the public on his scheme yet never made a dent in the public approval numbers. Truth be told, in the end he gave far more than 54.
“But that didn’t stop him from pressing forward anyway, and his underhanded methods at cramming his bill through Congress will also be enshrined in our national history…”
Christopher Freind, PhillyMag: The Mormon Issue
“He is Republican, pro-defense and hawkish on the War. He is also an unabashed Christian, although his particular sect is viewed with suspicion and prejudice. Oh, and he’s running for President.
“Based on the recent firestorm that erupted when a pastor called a presidential candidate’s religion a “cult,” it seems clear that we’re talking about Mitt Romney and his Mormon faith. But we’re not. The above description referred to none other than Dwight D. Eisenhower — a Jehovah’s Witness for most of his life.
“Eight years later, it was John F. Kennedy defending his Catholicism.
“Now, it’s Romney’s turn. But he is taking a ‘leap of faith’ by deliberately avoiding discussion about how his Mormonism influences his values, and how he views the relationship between religion and government.
“During the last presidential campaign, Romney made a strategic mistake on the religion issue. It wasn’t that he didn’t address his Mormonism, because he did. The problem was his timing. And he seems about to make the same mistake.
“As both Eisenhower and Kennedy proved, it’s the man, not the religion, who will carry the day. But that distinction doesn’t come from rolling over. It is earned. Time will soon tell whether Romney understands that lesson…”
Rick Moran, PJM: GOP’s “Polite Scrums”
“One of the reasons the Republican Party enjoys any popularity at all is because it is as comfortable as an old shoe: predictable, safe, conservative, and welcoming of those Americans who believe in old-fashioned values like overt patriotism, nuclear families, faith in God, and American exceptionalism. It is not a party of revolutionaries (the Tea Party is more classically defined as a counter-revolution), boat rockers, non-conformists, renegades, or heretics.
“This usually makes choosing a presidential candidate a rather staid affair with polite but pointed scrums among the candidates before the first caucuses and primaries until — inevitably — the inevitable candidate who had been backed by the establishment from the start moves ahead in a stately fashion and coasts to victory. The fact that the winning establishment candidate has almost always run for the presidency previously — the exceptions happening three times in the last 48 years (Goldwater, Ford, Bush #43) — also leads to the conclusion that it is his “turn” and that other candidates must wait in line…”
Roger Simon, PJM: Cain & the Death of Political Pros
“Karl Rove doesn’t think Herman Cain stands a chance of being POTUS. Bush’s number one consigliere said as much on Fox Thursday night.
“But is he right? I sure don’t know, but I certainly have a suspicion why Karl thinks what he does. The Herman Cain candidacy is a direct threat to his occupation. Rove — arguably the reigning monarch of political pros — went on to register his disapproval that Cain was wandering around Godforsaken places like Tennessee flogging his book, when any serious candidate should be pressing the flesh where it counts — to wit, Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina.
“Worse yet, the candidate isn’t raising any money (or not enough to have flashing neon signs that say “9…9…9…” like Burma-Shave along every highway in America — not that we have to be reminded).
“Now I have no beef with Rove. In fact, I rather like him, having interviewed him for PJTV. But it’s obvious that times have changed and that Herman Cain is running a very canny media campaign virtually all by himself…”
Real ClearPolitics: Fast & Furious Tapes … BO Contradicts Holder
“CNN’s John King plays Holder’s testimony to Congress on MAY 3, 2011, where he said he had only just recently heard about the Fast & Furious gunrunning program. ‘I’m not sure of the exact date, but I probably heard about Fast and Furious for the first time over the last few weeks,’ Attorney General Eric Holder said.
“Then CNN compares Holder’s testimony to what President Obama said in MARCH to CNN Espanol about the operation. ‘I heard on the news about this story that — Fast and Furious, where allegedly guns were being run into Mexico, and ATF knew about it, but didn’t apprehend those who had sent it.’”
AP: Sibelius Delays BOCare CLASS
“…’This is a victory for the American taxpayer and future generations,’ said Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., spearheading opposition in the Senate.’”The administration is finally admitting (the long-term care plan) is unsustainable and cannot be implemented.’
“Known as CLASS, the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports program was a long-standing priority of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass…
“…But a central design flaw dogged CLASS. Unless large numbers of healthy people willingly sign up during their working years, soaring premiums driven by the needs of disabled beneficiaries would destabilize it, eventually requiring a taxpayer bailout.
“After months insisting that could be fixed, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius finally acknowledged Friday she doesn’t see how…”
Byron York: GOP Moves to Repeal
“Republicans on Capitol Hill are having an I-told-you-so moment after the Obama administration admitted late Friday that the CLASS Act, a major component of Obamacare, is unworkable.
“CLASS, which stood for Community Living Assistance Services and Supports, was a pet project of the late Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy. It was supposed to help Americans pay the cost of long-term care. During the health care debate in 2009 and 2010, Democrats claimed that the program would not only pay for itself but would actually reduce the federal budget deficit. At the time Obamacare passed, Democrats claimed the law overall would cut the deficit by $140 billion over the next ten years; about $70 billion of that was supposed to come from the CLASS Act.
“But even then, lawmakers of both parties knew that CLASS was unworkable…”
John Gerstein, Politico: White House Visitors Logs
“The Justice Department filed a formal notice of appeal Friday afternoon regarding U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell’s August ruling rejecting arguments that the so-called WAVES records belong to the White House even though they are maintained and used by the Secret Service.
“The decision to appeal the ruling to the D.C. Circuit would appear to be in tension with Obama’s repeated pledges to operate the most transparent administration in history…”
Fox: Courts Change Alabama Immigration Law
“A federal appeals court on Friday suspended parts of Alabama’s tough immigration law while it considers the Justice Department’s request to strike it down.
“The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta ruled that Alabama cannot prosecute illegal immigrants for not carrying registration documents with them at all times or require schools to check the immigration status of all students.
“But the court said Alabama, among other things, can require police officers to verify the immigration status of anyone they lawfully stop if they suspect they are in the country illegally. Illegal immigrants will also be prohibited from obtaining a license to drive, get a vehicle or open a business…”
Neil Munro, Daily Caller: ZIP and Cash
“The top 10 ZIP codes for Democratic donors include a narrow set of four D.C. locations, two New York neighborhoods and two L.A. locations.
“Top GOP donors, however, congregate in three D.C. codes and seven diverse locations, including Palm Beach, Dallas and St. Louis, according to donation data processed via MyCityWay, an urban mapping app for cellphones.
“The app produced the numbers by combining population data from the U.S. Census Bureau with donor and donation data released Aug. 23 by the D.C.-based Center for Responsive Politics.
“The Democrats’ provincial sources illustrate the party’s reliance on donors from a few sectors — government, finance and commercial culture.
“In contrast, the GOP’s funding comes from a wider set of donors and sectors, giving their ZIP codes a broader geographic distribution.
“The two parties’ top 10 lists, however, share five ZIP codes, including 20004, which straddles Pennsylvania Ave. from the Capitol to the White House.
“That ZIP code has a low population, but a high percentage of political operatives…”
Daily Caller: Autos- Roberts Equals Volt
“Meet the Roberts electric car. Built in 1896, it gets a solid 40 miles to the charge — exactly the mileage Chevrolet advertises for the Volt, the highly touted $31,645 electric car General Motors CEO Dan Akerson called “not a step forward, but a leap forward.”
“The executives at Chevrolet can rest easy for now. Since the Roberts was constructed in an age before Henry Ford’s mass production, the 115-year-old electric car is one of a kind.
“But don’t let the car’s advanced age let you think it isn’t tough: Its present-day owner, who prefers not to be named, told The Daily Caller it still runs like a charm, and has even completed the roughly 60-mile London to Brighton Vintage Car Race…”
Solyndra: BO Hid His Blackberry
“House Republicans investigating the loan controversy had requested all internal White House documents about the issue. House Energy and Commerce subcommittee chair Rep. Cliff Stearns said that includes emails on the President’s Blackberry.
“On Friday the White House Counsel sent a letter to the House Energy and Commerce Committee explaining they won’t comply
