“Nobody’s gonna make ME vote!”

He hates “politicos” and, registered for 30 years, refuses to vote because of that hatred. And he lives today in my neighborhood.

I thought of him often as I read, without a break, Gingrich and Forstchen’s To Try Men’s Souls. This mix of history and novel tells about our attack on Trenton, Christmas, 1776, and the synergistic overlap between Private Jonathan Van Dorn, writer Thomas Paine, and General George Washington.

The Continental army shrank to 2,500 men. One-third of them wore burlap instead of boots and trailed blood in the snow. None of them were shaven, bathed, fed, paid, or trusting and it can be argued that none of them would have survived that Christmas nor’easter except for bags of rum. It’s also a simple thought, that only the toughest remained – the ones capable of holding to a principle while marching, climbing, rowing, loading damp muskets, and hauling cannon despite freezing temperatures, howling winds, lice, and clothing that was worn and soaked.

Washington needed a literary drumbeat from Paine, Paine had writer’s block, and Van Dorn was his mother’s youngest, most helpless, most articulate, and most stubborn.

The choice facing Washington: Attack Trenton or, through desertion, lose our army.

The three of them got the job done. Washington stuck to his intuition and his God, Henry Knox got the men and cannon across the river, and Paine, through Van Dorn, found his thoughts. (Parts of his “Crisis” have the quality of a Psalm.)

We lost 1 man, captured 1500, and immediately recruited 15,000.

All so that my yutz doesn’t have to vote…his teenage son, however, stopped bow practice and listened…

Karl Rove, WSJ: Tuesday’s Elections and the Democrat Agenda

Via Bob Guzzardi

“…the Republican-endorsed candidate for Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court, Judge Joan Orie Melvin, is mounting a strong effort against Democrat Jack Panella, despite a $1 million ad blitz targeting her that’s bankrolled by Philadelphia trial lawyers. A GOP victory would indicate trouble for Democrats in a state Mr. Obama carried by 10 points.

“A year ago, Democrats crowed that Mr. Obama had reshaped the political landscape to their advantage. Voters have lived under Democratic rule for nine months, and many of them, especially independents, don’t like what they’re seeing.

“Tuesday’s election will provide the most tangible evidence so far of how strong a backlash is building—and just how frightened centrist Democrats should be of 2010. For Republicans, it looks as if hope and change are on the way.

Coulter on Health Care

“Almost everything wrong with our health care system comes from government interference with the free market. If the health care system is broken, then fix it. Don’t try to invent a new one premised on all the bad ideas that are causing problems in the first place.”

Fortune: Google & BHO…Odd or Evil?

“In Google, the $22-billion-a-year online-advertising Goliath, Obama appears to have found a corporate kindred spirit….

“Google’s search engines regularly amass a huge quantity of information on American citizens. If you use Gmail to tell a friend about your upcoming ski trip, you might be surprised (and pleased, or not) to see ads for ski resorts popping up on your screen. If you use Google maps to pinpoint your location on a friend’s porch in Tennessee, Nashville restaurant ads may pop up. Google responds to privacy concerns by noting that this is not human spying, but an automatic software scan (similar to a virus filter) that delivers relevant rather than random ads to users.

“The Orwellian nature of Google’s power — its main business advantage — is now starting to freak out some people….”

Mark Steyn: Truth to Power

“Valerie Jarrett announced the other day that “we’re going to speak truth to power.”
“Who’s Valerie Jarrett? She’s “Senior Advisor” to the president of the United States — i.e., the leader of the most powerful nation on the face of the earth. You would think the most powerful man in the most powerful nation would find a hard job finding anyone on the planet to “speak truth to power” to. But I suppose if you’re as eager to do so as his Senior Advisor, there’s always somebody out there: The Supreme Leader of Iran. The Prime Minister of Belgium. The Deputy Tourism Minister of the Solomon Islands. But no. The Senior Advisor has selected targets closer to home…

Ethics

“Dozens of lawmakers have drawn scrutiny from their ethics monitor this year for everything from financial dealings to travel and campaign donations, according to a leaked account showing an active House panel secretly at work.

“Seven of the lawmakers—four not previously known—serve on a defense appropriations subcommittee that divvies up money for Pentagon contractors.

“Most of the names and investigative subjects, mentioned in a summary of the ethics committee’s work last July, were known. But the summary—obtained by The Washington Post—shows the widespread scope of preliminary reviews and investigations the panel can have before it at any one time.”

Sowell: Dismantle America, II

“Strong reciprocity”: punish not only defectors but also those who fail to punish them.

“Many years ago, at a certain academic institution, there was an experimental program that the faculty had to vote on as to whether or not it should be made permanent.

“I rose at the faculty meeting to say that I knew practically nothing about whether the program was good or bad, and that the information that had been supplied to us was too vague for us to have any basis for voting, one way or the other. My suggestion was that we get more concrete information before having a vote.

“The director of that program rose immediately and responded indignantly and sarcastically to what I had just said– and the faculty gave him a standing ovation.”

Krauthammer: AfgPak is BO’s

“Old Soviet joke:
“Moscow, 1953. Stalin calls in Khrushchev.
‘Niki, I’m dying. Don’t have much to leave you. Just three envelopes. Open them, one at a time, when you get into big trouble.’
A few years later, first crisis. Khrushchev opens envelope 1: ‘Blame everything on me. Uncle Joe.’
A few years later, a really big crisis. Opens envelope 2: ‘Blame everything on me. Again. Good luck, Uncle Joe.’
Third crisis. Opens envelope 3: ‘Prepare three envelopes.’”

Michael McConnell, WSJ: Pay Czar Unconstitutional…

“Last week’s announcement that “Pay Czar” Kenneth Feinberg slashed compensation for executives at seven large financial firms by an average of 50% stunned Wall Street, stoked the fires of populist resentment, and troubled economists. Will this government-mandated pay cut drive the most talented professionals away from these companies, endangering their recovery? Does it augur further politicization of economic decisions?

“Lost in the arguments over economics and political theory, however, is a more basic question: Was this action constitutional?”
